Default Mobile Intel Chipset 945G problem with GW:EN

I have the Mobile Intel Chipset 945G on my laptop and it has performed well with Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. But when I played the GW:EN sneak peak, my screen constantly shuts down for a few seconds and then recovers. Windows Vista then gives me the following error message: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered." This happens all over GW:EN, including outposts and towns. It can happen as often as 10 times per minute or as little as once per hour. I installed the latest driver from Intel's support page and even tried the previous driver versions, but the problem still persists. I submitted a ticket to NCsoft technical support and they just came up with a bunch of BS random excuses. It seems like many over users according to the GW:EN wiki page are experiencing similar problems. Anyone else have the same problem and anyone have any known solution?

Default Total BS

Not only did they give me a bunch of BS. The removed the page at: http://www.plaync.com/us/support/doc_2664.html?prod=48

stating they supported Intel graphics chip sets once the crashes started happening and now say they never supported intel chip sets.

Total crap. There is a whole section on the gamewiki preview event page talking about all the issues: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Guild_W...d#Kno wn_Bugs

This affected several members of my guild because it's more than just this specific chip set. I would like to know what percentage of players are actually on the 1 or 2 specifically "supported" cards. I am guessing less than half. It is such weezely way not to have to support your customers.

At first, the did indicate they did not support that chipset.
It may be they added support latter, but have retracted it again.

try using -dx8 and the -noshaders switches off the gw,exe shortcut

My Lenovo X60s laptop computer has a Mobile Intel Chipset 945 video card. This card worked well with the Guild Wars Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns. However, after I installed the Eye of the North presell, my card and driver started to experience problems. Every few minutes, the screen shuts down and recovers. I then get a message that there has been a problem with my video card driver and it has recovered. This can happen up to 10 times per minute. I ended up installing the latest video card driver from Intel's support website, but the problem still persists.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Guild Wars Technical Support. To further investigate the error you are receiving I would like for you to run a DirectX Diagnostic test on your system. This test (DxDiag) is simple and easy to run. To do so, please go to your Start Menu and then select the Run command. When the Run Dialogue box appears, please type in "DxDiag", without the quotes and click OK. A DirectX Diagnostics window will appear after a few moments. Once it has, please select the "Save All Information" button. This will save the generated output from the report we have just run. Then please update your incident at the provided link and attach the report. Once I receive it, I'll be better able to assist you with this issue.

Regards,
The Guild Wars Support Team

I have attached the information from DirectX Diagnostic, which reports that there are no problems with my video controller. According to Guild Wars wiki, many other laptop users with the Mobile Intel Chipset 945GM are experiencing similar problems. The postings and known issues can be found on the following page: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Guild_W...k_Peek_Weekend
I hope that this problem can be resolved before the official release of GW:EN as many laptop users like me intend on purchasing the full retail copy. It would be a shame for NCsoft to lose a multitude of customers using laptops due to a video driver problem that was once not an issue.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Guild Wars Technical Support.

Unfortunately, Windows Vistaâ„¢ is not a supported operating system for Guild Wars. The only supported operating systems are Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 98, and Windows ME. You might be able to play without any problems, but we cannot be sure how the game will work on an unsupported OS.

This may change in the near future. You can look on the community boards and update notes for announcements when that will happen. You would need to switch to a supported OS for us to assist you with this issue. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Regards,
The Guild Wars Support Team

Guild Wars Eye of the North does support Windows Vista. Windows Vista is shown as a supported operating system on the official Guild Wars Eye of the North site underneath the minimum and recommended system specs: http://www.guildwars.com/products/ey...enorth-faq.php. It also states it under the system requirements on the Eye of the North retail presell box that I purchased. One of the original campaigns is required to play Eye of the North since it is an expansion. So explain to me why Guild Wars does not support Windows Vista if the expansion does. In other words, how are you able to make an expansion support a certain operating system and a required original unsupportive of the same OS? The problem is not the OS, but a compatibility issue between Eye of the North and the Intel Chipset 945GM as even Windows XP users are experiencing the same issue. The Intel Chipset 945GM is also specifically stated on the official Guild Wars site as a supported video card: http://www.plaync.com/us/support/doc_2664.html?prod=48. If Guild Wars does not support Windows Vista, how come I am able to run Guild Wars Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns fine but not Eye of the North with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit? As Windows Vista is now on the face of every single new PC on the market and will soon dominate the PC industry as a whole, it would be a wise decision for NCsoft to attract a broader spectrum of prospective customers.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting and updating us with your status.

We apologize for what appears to be an additional step, Eye of the North is the first officially supported expansion for Guild Wars that will run on Vista. However, the other three campaigns do run on a Windows Vista, they are just not officially supported.

Additionally, it appears that the drivers for your laptop's video adapter are out of date and need to be updated. Please follow the instructions in this article to do so:

Title: Installing/Reinstalling Video Drivers
URL: http://www.plaync.com/us/support/doc_5089.html

Please let us know if this does not resolve the issue.

The drivers for my video adapter on my IBM Lenovo X60s are NOT out of date. If you check my DirectX Diagnostic information, my video adapter driver is 7.14.0010.1295. Once again, here is my evidence:

When you go to Intel's support page and check for the latest driver for the Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset for Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, you get the following driver:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ion〈=eng

And when you click on the "Read Me" text page for this driver, you get the following information:
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1379...e_winvista.txt
The "Read Me" text page clearly states that the version of this driver, which is the most recent, is 7.14.10.1295, which is the version I have on my computer as evidence in my DirectX Diagnostic information.

In an effort to further make the game work, I have even attempted to install the previous driver versions to no avail. So I returned to the latest version and continued to experience the same problem. In other words, your statement "it appears that the drivers for your laptop's video adapter are out of date and need to be updated" is completely wrong.

You have to realize that I am using a supportive system, Windows Vista, on Guild Wars Eye of the North. I am not having problems on the other campaigns. The video card driver problem only occurs with Eye of the North, which supports my OS and my video card.

I honestly do not know how much evidence I have to show to you and David that the problem is a compatibility issue between Eye of the North and the Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. Every time you respond, you come up with a different excuse that I end up disproving. And as I showed to David, many users with the Mobile Intel 945GM chipset are experiencing the same problem. This is evident on the Guild Wars Eye of the North wiki page: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Guild_W...k_Peek_Weekend
It's time for the Guild Wars support team to stop coming up with excuses and fix the problem. It'll help us all; more customers for you with less complaints and more enjoyment for the game for us.

Hi,

Officially, Intel Graphics Adapters are not supported to play Guild Wars on. They lack the functionality to support the game to its fullest. However, that being said, I would like you to try the following:

Please try to start the game in the following fashion-

1. Click Start and then click Run

2. Click Browse and select your gw.exe program. It will be in "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars" by default.

3. The Run window should now read-

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

Modify the line in the run window to read

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -noshaders

4. Press OK to run the game.

Please try that and let us know what happens. If it helps, we can offer instructions on creating a new shortcut that will run the game for you in the same fashion.

Regards,
Guild Wars Technical Support

How incompetent can the Guild Wars Technical Support staff be? Well, nothing I can argue now that they removed the page on NCsoft that showed the Intel 945G chipset as a supported video card. Can't argue against him now that GW does not support the Intel Chipset. And I thought AT&T customer service was bad . . . .

Instead of opening a new topic you might want to check here:

There's also a reply from Gaile in there regarding these driver issues, they are working on the problem with Intel.

Thanks, it looks like ArenaNet finally came up with a patch after receiving thousands of complaints. They finally figured out that it's probably better to earn back a few thousand customers than to cover up and hide a problem.

HOPEFULLY it's fixed. We'll find out AFTER we buy the game and play it again.

lol the problem was easy to fix anyway either -noshaders in target, or just turn shaders down to low in graphics options. The fix was found on the 24th.

Yeah, I turned off shaders completely and turned all the graphic options to low, but the problem still persisted. Looks like turning them down did help for others though. Oh well, we'll see on Friday AFTER we buy the game if it was fixed or not.
